Brandy is helping bring A Different World back to Hillman by recording a fresh version of the sitcom’s iconic theme song. The Grammy-winning singer will perform the opening theme for Netflix’s upcoming sequel series, joining a legacy of artists that includes Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, and Boyz II Men. Her rendition will be featured at the start of every episode when the 10-part series premieres on September 24.
For Brandy, the opportunity is especially meaningful. The singer and actress grew up watching A Different World during its original run on NBC and says the theme song has always been part of what made the show so memorable.
“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy told Deadline. “It was one of those shows that I had to watch every time it came on. I remember the song and how it made me feel.”
The iconic A Different World theme song has been performed by several artists over the years. Phoebe Snow introduced it during the first season, Aretha Franklin took over from Seasons 2 through 5, and Boyz II Men delivered the final version in Season 6.
The theme was co-written by original cast member Dawnn Lewis alongside Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby.
Brandy’s updated rendition arrives as Netflix prepares to welcome a new generation of students to Hillman College while reuniting fans with many familiar faces. Maleah Joi Moon leads the cast as Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, with Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprising their beloved roles.
As Deborah begins her freshman year at her parents’ alma mater, she must carve out her own identity while living under the weight of the Wayne family legacy.
She’ll be joined by a diverse group of classmates, including Alijah Kai as first-generation criminal justice student Rashida Duvall, Cornell Young IV as standout athlete Shaquille Johnson, Jordan Aaron Hall as psychology major Amir Rodale, Kennedi Reece as small-town freshman Hazel Henry, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian-Nigerian entrepreneur chasing his dreams in the fashion industry.
The sequel also reunites several stars from the original series. Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Karen Malina White, and Ajai Sanders are all set to return in their original roles. Guest appearances will include Tichina Arnold, Raven Goodwin, Method Man, Joshua Suiter, and Norman Nixon Jr.
Behind the scenes, the new series maintains strong ties to the original. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while original writers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood return as executive producers.
Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original A Different World and played a key role in reshaping the show after its first season, is directing the Netflix premiere.
