Drake is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with UMG. The artist has been signed to the label for years, but following his feud with Kendrick Lamar, he decided to file a lawsuit, alleging that the label was attempting to defame him. Drake has also argued that the alleged efforts were aimed at reducing his value in future contract negotiations.
The lawsuit was dismissed months ago. Drake eventually appealed the ruling, with the case set to return to court on December 4, when a judge will consider whether to overturn the original decision. If the ruling stands, the lawsuit will officially come to an end.
Meanwhile, questions have emerged about whether Drake is still signed to UMG and what obligations he may still have to the label. There were even reports that UMG was removing social media clips related to Drake’s new “FOMO” short film.
According to DJ Akademiks, he believes Drake will remain under contract with UMG until May or June of next year, after which the rapper will be free to do whatever he wants.
However, Akademiks also floated another possibility that is sure to raise some eyebrows. He believes there’s a scenario where Drake could ultimately re-sign with UMG as part of a broader settlement connected to the lawsuit.
It’s certainly a bold prediction, though there are some obvious hurdles. UMG has shown no indication that it believes there is anything to settle, particularly after the lawsuit was initially dismissed. If that decision is overturned, the expectation would be for the label to vigorously contest the case. At the same time, considering everything that has unfolded, it’s worth wondering whether Drake would even be interested in returning to UMG.
For now, there are plenty of questions surrounding the situation, and the coming months could provide some answers.
