When Drake chose to sue UMG Recordings following his feud with Kendrick Lamar, plenty of people felt the move had damaged the rapper’s reputation. After all, rap beefs are traditionally settled through bars and diss tracks, not in court.
Drake, however, was quick to argue that the lawsuit was not about revenge. Instead, he framed it as a battle against the system, claiming that UMG was working against him in a way that could hurt his value during future contract negotiations. In his view, the case could ultimately help artists who lack the resources to take on major-label systems themselves.
While some people remain skeptical of Drake’s motivations, he has continued to pursue the legal battle against UMG. His lawsuit was dismissed months ago, but Drake moved to appeal the decision.
Now, according to The Drake Docket on X, a date has been set for the appeal. Oral arguments are scheduled to take place on December 4, 2026.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will hear arguments from Drake’s legal team, while UMG Recordings is asking the court to uphold the original ruling. If UMG gets its request, the lawsuit would likely be over for good.
Whatever the outcome, the case is sure to generate plenty of strong reactions and criticism surrounding Drake. It remains difficult to see a rap beef reach this stage, even with the contractual and financial factors involved.
