Meagan Good Opens Up About the Downside of Appearing in 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” Video

Breaking free from a child-star image in Hollywood is challenging enough, but getting the industry to see you as more than just the attractive woman in a music video can be an entirely different struggle. Meagan Good experienced both after playing 50 Cent’s love interest in his 2003 hit “21 Questions.” While the decision initially achieved exactly what she wanted, it eventually came with an unexpected downside.

During an appearance on The Crew Has It, hosted by Michael Rainey Jr. and Gianni Paolo, Good opened up about her efforts to move beyond the younger roles she had become associated with. Having spent much of her childhood acting in films such as Friday and Eve’s Bayou, she found it difficult to convince casting directors to see her as an adult. Taking on a role opposite one of rap’s biggest stars appeared to be the perfect opportunity to change that perception. Although the video introduced audiences to a more mature side of Good, she later discovered that Hollywood was largely considering her for roles that highlighted her sex appeal.

At the time, the decision seemed like a smart career move. “21 Questions,” featuring Nate Dogg, was one of the biggest songs of 2003, spending four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. In the accompanying music video, Good played 50 Cent’s devoted girlfriend, with much of the storyline revolving around his time behind bars. She had successfully moved away from her child-star image, but Hollywood seemingly replaced it with another limited perception of who she could be as an actress.

Good has spoken before about the unexpected challenges that came with that career decision. In a 2021 interview with Interview Magazine, she revealed that she intentionally pursued more mature roles around the time she appeared in Biker Boyz and 50 Cent’s “21 Questions.” However, she soon realized that the move had left her associated with a specific image.

“But then that’s all that anybody ever saw me as,” she recalled. Good explained that casting directors had already formed assumptions about the kinds of roles she could play, sometimes shutting her out of opportunities to audition for completely different characters. She spent much of her twenties working to break free from those expectations and eventually decided to cut her hair short in an effort to change people’s perception of her.

Good also expressed similar frustrations during an interview with The Daily Beast, where she discussed how her association with Hip Hop affected the kinds of roles she was offered. She felt that audiences and industry executives sometimes confused the characters she played with the full extent of her acting abilities.

Her more recent projects have given her the chance to challenge those perceptions. Good currently stars as Regina Harris, a district attorney, in Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt. The role holds particular significance for her, considering her long-standing desire to portray characters beyond the romantic interests she was often cast to play. More than two decades after appearing in “21 Questions,” she continues to make intentional career choices to show that her talent goes far beyond a single image.
