Actress Cynthia Erivo has landed the role of Tupac Shakur’s mother in the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, Snoop.
On Wednesday (Nov. 4), The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Erivo will portray the late Afeni Shakur in what is expected to be a significant role. However, no additional details about her character have been revealed.
The 39-year-old British actress most recently played Elphaba in the 2024 film Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, released a year later. Erivo has also built an acting career spanning more than 15 years across film and television.
The Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner joins an already impressive cast, which includes Camron Jones (Panic) as Tupac, Lauren London as Snoop’s late mother, Algee Smith (Euphoria) as Warren G, Myles Bullock (BMF) as Dr. Dre, and rapper SwayvoTwain, the son of the late D’Angelo and Angie Stone, as The Notorious B.I.G. Rapper G Perico will portray Snoop’s early mentor, Big Reecie Cup, while Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss takes on the lead role of Snoop Dogg.
During a June 2025 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Snoop was asked why he chose Daviss to portray him.
“Jonathan is the whole thing,” he said. “He’s a dynamic actor. He’s a great spirit and he’s a learner. He’s able to take things and make it better.”
Last month, Ice-T also revealed in a post on X that he would be making an appearance in the film.
“I’m in LA to film in @SnoopDogg’s movie. I don’t know if I was supposed to say that…But I said it.”
However, Ice-T did not disclose which character he would be playing.
Snoop will be produced by Brian Grazer (8 Mile) and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) for Universal Pictures. The project will also serve as the first film under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment.
Principal photography is already underway, with the biopic scheduled to arrive in theaters on Aug. 6, 2027.
