Killer Mike says he learned to take monogamy seriously after his now-wife once pulled a gun on him for being with another woman.
The Grammy-winning rapper opened up about the incident during an appearance on Club Shay Shay last week, where he reflected on his 20-year marriage to Shana Render, with whom he shares four children.
Before they tied the knot, Render confronted Mike at another woman’s house — and things got intense.
Around the 22-minute mark of the interview, host Shannon Sharpe asked how difficult it’s been for him to stay monogamous in marriage, prompting Mike to recall his involvement with a dancer.
“I was smitten by this dancer, but I knew we weren’t supposed to be doing anything out in the open. My old lady didn’t like this dancer,” he said, explaining that the woman was attracted to him in a “lustful” way.
With his then-girlfriend not around, Mike said he was having “too much fun” at the dancer’s place when Render suddenly turned up with a gun.
“I got a call. ‘Hey, man. Maybe you should come back, man. We should run around, too.’ I was like, ‘Well, I am trying to get some cardio in [to] lose weight,'” Mike joked.
“And man, I got a call when I got in the door. ‘Say, man, [if you don’t] bring your ass out that girl house right now? I’m going to kill both of y’all,'” Mike continued. “I said, ‘What, man? Get out of here. Stop playing, man. I ain’t even over there, man. You just seen my truck.'”
“I looked outside, and there she was — my wife, standing in the driveway with my gun pointed right at me. I was like, ‘Okay, damn,’” Mike recalled. “I felt like Henry from Goodfellas—I woke up like, ‘Aye.’ I jumped in that truck, and she said, ‘I ain’t never seen your fat ass run so fast in my life.’ After that, being monogamous got a whole lot easier.”
After picking up the “RUN” rapper, Render took him straight to his Aunt Deborah, who made her disappointment crystal clear. “Man, I would’ve rather got shot,” Mike said of her reaction. “After that, the rules changed. I told the dancer, ‘Look, I like you, but you gotta talk to her. If you can convince her we’re cool and you ain’t no problem, maybe we can do a little twirl in the wind. But I don’t wanna get shot, and I don’t ever want my Auntie Deborah feeling like that again.’”
Later in the interview, Mike also brought up Steph and Ayesha Curry, taking a moment to apologize for previously joking about their marriage.
