Kali Uchis Cautions Emerging Artists Against Signing With Major Labels: ‘The Industry Isn’t What It Used to Be’

Kali Uchis is advising up-and-coming artists to think carefully before signing with a major record label.

Speaking during a Q&A at Billboard’s Latin Music Week 2025, the Colombian American star shared some candid thoughts on how much the music industry has evolved. According to Uchis, the game has completely changed — and major labels are no longer the only path to success.

“Well, advice that I would give to somebody now, and that I give to a lot of artists now, [is that] the industry is very different from how it was when I started,” she said. “I would say that signing to a major label isn’t necessary and I would tell people not to do that. And most importantly, not to compromise.”

The Telepatía singer also stressed the importance of staying true to your vision, adding, “That’s the main thing I’ve always kept in mind with my artistry — to never compromise and to be very intentional about what I’m trying to put into the world.”

Uchis’ remarks come as more artists are finding success through independent distribution, social media, and direct-to-fan strategies. Known for effortlessly blending genres and keeping full control of her creative direction, Uchis has always championed artistic independence.

Despite her stance, she recently signed a new deal with Capitol Records and reflected on her evolution in a statement.

“Thank you all for the well-intentioned wishes on this journey, and thank you to my team! I have boundless gratitude for my silent ascent throughout the years and am very much looking forward to what’s next,” Uchis shared of her move to Capitol.
