Doja Cat recently shared her love for Phonte’s verse on Little Brother’s “Whatever You Say,” calling it one of the greatest in hip-hop history.
While on Instagram Live doing her makeup, Doja played the track as she worked on her lashes, mouthing the lyrics all the way through. When the verse ended, she paused to tell her viewers exactly how she felt.
“Bruh, that’s one of my favorite verses in the entire fucking history of rap ever,” she said with a big smile. “That shit was so smooth. He didn’t rhyme one fucking word. I don’t care what anybody says.”
Doja went on to clarify that Phonte did rhyme a couple of lines, but she stood firm on her point that the verse’s brilliance comes from how effortlessly it flows without relying heavily on rhymes. “It works,” she said. “You don’t have to rhyme.”
Her shoutout to Phonte came just days after Little Brother wrapped up the final shows of their farewell tour. Earlier this year, Phonte and Big Pooh announced the Curtain Call tour as their last run together before officially retiring the group.
“I wanted to let people know, me and Phonte, we super good,” Pooh told AllHipHop. “We had a chance to reconcile, come back, and I believe we put Little Brother to bed the proper way.”
He continued, “We were able to do it the right way, and that’s something we both felt was important—not just for us, but to give our fans that moment too.”
Phonte echoed the sentiment, saying, “Pooh said it beautifully. We came back after a decade, got our first No. 1 record, made our own movie, threw our own block party, and regained control of our catalog. Our work is complete. Our mission as Little Brother is complete.”
“Pooh and I were able to not just rebuild, but truly cement our brotherhood,” Phonte added. “That was the most important part. That was the God of it. Our work as Little Brother is done—but our lives as Phonte and Thomas will continue forever.”
