SZA has finally spoken out about the heated rant Nicki Minaj directed at her earlier this summer.
The two, who once collaborated on Nicki’s 2014 hit “Feeling Myself” featuring Beyoncé, unexpectedly became rivals when Minaj went on a days-long tirade that also targeted TDE’s Punch.
In a new interview with GQ, SZA addressed the drama, admitting she’s still unsure why it happened. “I don’t know her,” she said. “We have no connection to each other. There’s no backstory. Like, there was no through line narrative. It was just like, ‘Roc Nation’… I don’t know where it came from. That’s not even my place to correct a narrative that I don’t got shit to do with. It was a little strange. It was very like, ‘Why?’ But also, you know, ‘I guess.’”
The feud started in mid-July when Minaj suddenly took shots at SZA online, quote-tweeting her post about mercury being in retrograde and mocking her for once having fake freckles.
“Go draw your freckles back on bookie,” Nicki tweeted, to which SZA calmly replied, “I don’t give a fuck bout none of that weird shit you popping.”
Though SZA attempted to disengage, Minaj continued throwing insults, even dragging Punch into it. “Btch damn near broke that man back & leg. Bitch fat chubby & Skinny @ the same damn time,” Nicki wrote. “Bitch where are those 30 million streams that disappeared on Spotify like your feaux freckles.”
SZA later responded one last time, posting a screenshot of what appeared to be Minaj asking her for a feature in the past. “Nicki, you absolutely know my music and what I contribute cause you’ve asked for features twice to no response,” she wrote, adding, “Lol ur having a moment… I’m not sure why but be blessed.”
