Kumail Nanjiani has spoken out about a bizarre and completely false rumor claiming he had an affair with former First Lady Michelle Obama.
During a recent episode of the So True with Caleb Hearon podcast, the actor and comedian addressed the story that seemingly popped up out of nowhere, revealing that his wife, Emily Gordon, was actually the one who told him about it. “I was so excited!” he joked.
“One of our friends pulled Emily aside and said, ‘Hey, so I heard that Kumail and Michelle Obama are, like, doing it,’” Nanjiani recalled. “She wasn’t even mad, but a bunch of people kept bringing it up to me.”
He went on to make it clear the rumor had no basis in reality. “I have never met Michelle Obama,” Nanjiani said.
His comments come amid ongoing speculation about possible marital issues between Michelle and former President Barack Obama. Earlier this year, Michelle was notably absent alongside Barack at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and at President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Back in 2022, Michelle also made headlines after candidly admitting there was a long stretch where she wasn’t particularly fond of her husband. “People think I’m being catty by saying this — it’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” she told Revolt TV. “And guess when it happened? When those kids were little.”
“And for 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even,’” Michelle continued. “And guess what? Marriage isn’t 50/50 — ever, ever.”
“There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, 40, but guess what?” she added. “Ten years — we’ve been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 — it’s just how you look at it. And people give up … [saying], ‘Five years – I can’t take it.’”
