Selena Gomez is adding another huge movie role to her growing résumé, this time joining forces with Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender for director Brady Corbet’s upcoming film — a mysterious “X-rated” epic already creating major buzz at the Cannes Film Festival.
According to Variety, details about the project first emerged after Blanchett mentioned during a Cannes masterclass that she was set to collaborate with Corbet on his next feature. Several outlets later confirmed that Gomez and Fassbender had officially joined the cast as well. While plot details are still being kept secret, Corbet previously teased the film as “really, really genre-defying” and revealed that the story stretches from the 19th century to present day, with much of it focused on the 1970s.
The untitled movie is also shaping up to be a massive production. During an appearance at the Storyhouse Screenwriting Festival in Dublin last month, director Brady Corbet revealed that the script is around 200 pages long. By comparison, his previous film, The Brutalist, came from a 165-page screenplay and still ended up running for more than three hours.
Corbet’s remarks about wanting to create an “X-rated” movie have added even more intrigue to the project. The filmmaker is reportedly using rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, continuing the visually bold filmmaking style he’s become known for through projects like Vox Lux and The Brutalist.
For Selena Gomez, the role represents another major move deeper into prestige cinema after years of balancing music, television, beauty ventures, and more serious acting roles. Since starring in Spring Breakers, Gomez has steadily expanded her acting résumé. Most recently, she appeared in Emilia Pérez, which earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz.
Outside of acting, Gomez has continued dominating pop culture conversations as well. Over the past few months, she and her husband, Benny Blanco, have gone viral multiple times thanks to their candid public appearances and revealing social media moments.
Gomez recently called herself “Mrs. Blanco” on Instagram while posting intimate snapshots from their married life, following weeks of online discussion sparked by Blanco’s Friends Keep Secrets podcast and the couple’s unusually open conversations about their relationship.
