Michael Jackson Biopic Nears Record as Highest-Grossing Music Movie of All Time

Michael Jackson’s life story on the big screen is edging closer to a major box office milestone.

More than a month after arriving in theaters, Michael has pulled in an estimated $846.3 million worldwide, placing it within reach of becoming the highest-grossing music biopic ever released.

According to Billboard, the film is currently second only to Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 Queen biopic focused on Freddie Mercury, which earned around $911 million globally during its theatrical run. With less than $65 million separating the two movies, many industry watchers believe Michael could break that record in the weeks ahead.

The film’s momentum continues to build. Over the past week alone, it brought in more than $58 million worldwide, further strengthening its path toward the top spot among music biopics.

A key driver behind the movie’s success has been its strong international performance. Nearly 60 percent of Michael’s worldwide earnings have come from audiences outside the United States and Canada, highlighting the enduring global impact of Michael Jackson’s legacy.

The movie also marks another significant achievement for producer Graham King, who was behind both Michael and Bohemian Rhapsody. King previously enjoyed success in the music biopic space with the 2014 Four Seasons-inspired film Jersey Boys.
