Tyler, the Creator Says Meta Smart Glasses “Need to Be Banned” Over Privacy and Consent Concerns

Tyler, The Creator isn’t a fan of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses.

The rapper took to his Instagram Stories to react to a Wired article highlighting the growing misuse of the wearable technology, which allows users to record video from their point of view.

Sharing a link to a Wired Instagram post about the report, Tyler didn’t hold back.

“BOOOOOOOOOO!!!” he wrote. “Anyone who uses these glasses is a real weirdo. These shits need to be banned. Ray Ban Meta who ever, I will continue to ‘complain’ about these.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has heavily promoted the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have become a popular tool for capturing hands-free video, particularly among content creators. Developed in partnership with Ray-Ban parent company EssilorLuxottica, the glasses debuted in 2021 and have since emerged as the leading product in the smart glasses market. According to CNBC, Meta recently unveiled a new version of the Ray-Ban glasses priced at $299, making them the most affordable model yet.

As smart glasses continue to gain popularity, critics have raised concerns over the technology’s potential for discreet surveillance and the privacy issues that come with it. Tyler has been vocal about his frustration with being recorded by strangers in public. Earlier this year, he criticized a post that shared security camera footage of him browsing a bookstore in Mexico City without his permission.

“So annoying. Just existing, living, mind your biz and next thing u know it’s security camera footage of you just existing uploaded so folks can either prove they saw you or get some engagement they crave,” he wrote. “I understand the excitement but the behavior is going to morph into everyone having footage or anything involving them uploaded for content.”

Tyler has also expressed concern over the rapid expansion of data centers across the country. Recently, he shared a post highlighting a South DeKalb neighborhood’s opposition to a proposed data center hub.

“Again, death to all data centers,” Tyler wrote on his Instagram Stories. “The growth of water contamination is insane. Shocked how this is even a convo but of course every official looks out for their own pocket linings.”
