Skilla Baby believes surviving a drive-by shooting was “easy” compared to the ongoing challenges he has faced with his mental health.
The Detroit rapper opened up during a conversation with Pretty Vee on Friday’s (July 24) episode of The Outlet, revealing that he has dealt with significant mental health struggles that have been more difficult to overcome than the injuries he suffered after being grazed in a May 2025 shooting.
At the time of the incident, Skilla was driving a black SUV that was struck by 20 rounds near the 8 Mile Road and Beech Daly Road area in Redford Township, causing the vehicle to crash. A suspect was arrested the following month in connection with the shooting.
“People think ‘cause I’m so strong and I just go through stuff that I don’t I don’t go through mental problems. I think my mental health problems was worse than getting shot,” Skilla said around the 17-minute mark of the interview. “Getting shot was easy.”
“I’m strong, I’m a soldier. But my mental health problems, the things I truly deal with, that shit be worse,” he continued, explaining that many men struggle because they don’t give themselves an “outlet” to process their emotions and grief.
Skilla also admitted that while he isn’t comfortable showing vulnerability, he feels he has a responsibility to use his experiences to motivate and encourage others.
“I’mma really tell the world what I be going through,” he said. “Mentally, like, I don’t got to tell every detail of it, but I can like really let people know ‘cause a lot of kids do look up to me. And I be wanting them to know, I go through stuff too.”
A month after the shooting, Skilla shared a video on social media thanking fans for their support and prayers while also dropping a freestyle about the traumatic experience, according to XXL.
“I don’t fear n**as, I fear God/Y’all n**as shot my truck up 20 times, I never cried,” Skilla rapped.
