Marvel Studios officially confirmed the news at San Diego Comic-Con, announcing Black Panther 3 with Ryan Coogler returning to direct. The highly anticipated sequel has also secured a release date of December 15, 2028.
Kevin Feige and Ryan Coogler shared the announcement during Marvel’s Hall H panel, with returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joining David Jonsson on stage for the reveal. Marvel’s official X account confirmed the news, stating: “Ryan Coogler returns to Marvel Studios to direct Black Panther 3, only in theaters December 15, 2028.”
Jonsson, best known for portraying android “Andy” in Alien: Romulus and appearing in HBO’s Industry, is set to portray an older version of T’Challa’s son, who was first introduced briefly at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The film revealed that Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa had a son with Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o.
During Marvel’s Hall H presentation, Jonsson spoke to the crowd about joining the franchise, saying: “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege, the blessing to join… Believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”
Coogler is heading into Black Panther 3 following his recent Oscar victory for Best Original Screenplay for Sinners.
The upcoming film is also set to be filmed and presented in 70mm large format, marking a major production effort for a Marvel Studios project.
During the same Marvel panel, the studio also revealed that Ryan Gosling will take on the role of Ghost Rider in an upcoming movie directed by Shawn Levy.
