Tyga is making headlines with his latest album—for all the wrong reasons.
This week, $TARFACE, the Decaydance Records artist’s ninth studio album, received a brutally harsh review from Pitchfork. Written by Drew Millard, the review gave the project a rare zero-star rating, marking the publication’s first score of its kind in nearly 20 years.
To put it into perspective, the album— which Tyga has openly confirmed incorporated AI in its creation — received a total of zero stars. Not one. Not half. A complete zero.
In Drew Millard’s review, $TARFACE was described as a “piece of shit” that “places the listener in their own personal [David] Cronenberg film.” He also criticized the project as being “smug and complacent,” saying it deserved nothing higher than a zero-star rating.
Millard later doubled down on X, writing, “All I can say is: Tyga, you really earned it.”
As of now, Tyga has not publicly responded to Pitchfork handing his album the publication’s rare zero-star rating.
In a recent interview with VIBE’s Mikey Fresh, Tyga acknowledged that he and his team “definitely used” AI while making the album, arguing that the technology is comparable to Auto-Tune.
Meanwhile, several artists have pushed back against the growing use of generative AI in music, including SZA. After discovering in June that hundreds of her songs had reportedly been used to train AI models, the seven-time Grammy winner slammed musicians who support what she called this kind of “degenerate shit,” describing it as “disgusting.”
“There’s nothing you could ever say to me to make this okay,” she added at the time.
