Summer Walker is seeking to be released from her contract with Love Renaissance Records, accusing the company of mishandling her finances and withholding earnings associated with her name and likeness.
The singer filed a lawsuit in August, seeking damages and a court ruling that would declare her September 15, 2017 agreement with LVRN “void and unenforceable.”
The 10-page complaint questions both the terms of Walker’s contract and the label’s management of her finances. She alleges that LVRN redirected funds intended to support her career, including recording and touring budgets, to cover excessive company expenses.
Walker also claims she was denied revenue from YouTube and Amazon pages featuring her name and likeness. Her allegations against the independent record label and management company include fraud and breach of contract.
Her attorney, Keith Moten, described the dispute as a breakdown of trust in a statement to Rolling Stone.
“Summer has given LVRN iconic music, and some of the best years of her life,” Moten said. “In return, LVRN has breached Summer’s trust in them and has failed Summer in numerous ways.”
The LVRN lawsuit is one of two legal battles involving Summer Walker’s recording contracts. Interscope has also filed a lawsuit against her over music the label claims she still owes under her agreement.
The $50 million lawsuit came after Walker notified Interscope of her intention to exit the deal under California’s “seven-year rule.” Interscope argues that her departure would leave her five-album commitment incomplete and is seeking damages over the remaining releases.
