John Legend Performs ‘Ordinary People’ for Inmates Who Battled L.A. Fires

John Legend showed up to lift spirits of incarcerated firefighters who’ve been fighting L.A.’s wildfires.

The 12-time Grammy winner shared an Instagram reel Sunday where he visited CDCR Fire (Camp) Program crew members after their 24-hour shift. The program takes inmates with minimum-custody status (those with eight years or less on their sentences), who can earn up to $10.24 daily.

During his time with the crew battling the Eaton Fire, Legend broke into his 2004 breakout hit “Ordinary People.” The firefighters had mixed reactions – some seemed happy for the impromptu performance, while others showed the exhaustion from their long shift.

“Yesterday, I spent time with some of the nearly 1,000 incarcerated firefighters who have been battling LA’s wildfires,” Legend shared in his caption. “After a 24-hour shift, they described their intense work on the line. They are often the first to arrive and the last to leave and perform the toughest and riskiest tasks to protect our communities.” He added, “Something that stuck with me from this group was that no matter where we come from, we all have the capacity to serve, protect, and rebuild—not just for ourselves but for our community.”

Legend and Chrissy Teigen had to leave their own home because of the wildfires earlier this month, but were able to head back by Jan. 13.
