Brian McKnight’s son, Niko McKnight, has passed away after a two-year fight with cancer. He was 32 years old.
Niko’s uncle, Claude McKnight, broke the heartbreaking news in an emotional TikTok video shared on May 29. In the clip, Claude called Niko “ridiculously talented,” praising his abilities as a singer, guitarist, and photographer. He recalled Niko as a “quirky” and “curious” person who was always great to be around. Claude also asked viewers to respond with compassion and not focus on the family’s previous disputes.
“I’m devastated at my nephews’ passing. If you comment please do do in love, and NOT at what you may have heard about the relationship my brother had/has with his kids. Thank you,” Claude wrote in the video caption.
Additionally, Niko’s mother Julie McKnight posted a statement on Instagram confirming her son’s tragic death.
“It is with profound sadness that Julie McKnight and family announce the passing of her beloved son Cole Nikolas McKnight, affectionately known as “Niko.” on Thursday, May 29, 2025,” the message states. “Nikolas was a cherished husband, son, brother, grandson, uncle, and nephew whose warmth, laughter, and love touched the lives of all who knew him. Nikolas was a self taught artist of music and photography. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family and all those who held him dear.”
Niko revealed his cancer diagnosis publicly in January 2024, sharing hope and appreciation for the support he received, especially from his wife. Though he showed positive signs in December 2024, he ultimately lost the difficult fight.
Niko’s bond with his father had been troubled for years. The senior McKnight had previously called his older children, including Niko, a “product of sin” and “pure evil,” and had legally changed his name to match his youngest son with his current wife, Leilani Mendoza.
Brian alleged that his ex-wife and Niko’s mother, Julie McKnight, blocked him from helping Niko during his sickness, a claim she has rejected. Niko had previously collaborated with his father in their group MCKNIGHT. McKnight has not yet commented on his son’s death as of press time.
