Sony Confirms PlayStation 2 as Best-Selling Console Ever

Two decades later, Sony’s PlayStation 2 remains the king of consoles, now officially surpassing 160 million units sold. Released in 2000, the PS2’s dominance was celebrated as part of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, marking the first sales update since 2012 when it reported 155 million units sold.

The PS2’s enduring success is credited to its groundbreaking features for its time, including a built-in DVD player, backward compatibility with PS1 games, and an unmatched library of titles like Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts. A price drop to $199 in 2002 further cemented its appeal.

This milestone places the PS2 ahead of the Nintendo DS (154 million units) and the Nintendo Switch (146 million units). Sony’s console history also highlights the PS4 with 117 million units sold, the PS1 at 101 million, and the PS3 at 87 million.

Den of Geek’s Matthew Byrd credits the PS2’s success to its timing and technological edge. Launching in 2000, it hit the market a year before rivals like Xbox and GameCube, giving Sony an undeniable head start. Even after ending production in 2013, the PS2’s legacy remains unmatched.
