Tuxedos and designer gowns dominated the Oscars as usual, with celebs typically flaunting custom high-fashion fits on the red carpet, during afterparties, and inside the Dolby Theatre. But Adam Sandler clearly had other plans for Sunday’s fashion statement.
The comedy legend crashed first-time Oscars host Conan O’Brien’s opening monologue sporting a $175 Aviator Nation neon blue hoodie paired with basketball shorts. Midway through his monologue, which kicked off with a parody of a pivotal scene from The Substance, Conan called attention to Sandler’s casual ensemble.
“For such a prestigious night, it’s important that everyone is properly dressed, okay?” Conan remarked before singling out Sandler. After some friendly banter, Conan and Adam launched into what became one of the night’s most hilarious moments.
“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” Sandler fired back when O’Brien questioned his outfit choice. Conan then compared Sandler to “a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.” because of his hoodie and shorts combo.
“You know what, Conan? I like the way I look because I’m a good person,” Sandler retorted. “I don’t care about what I wear or what I don’t wear. Did my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers?”
O’Brien offered an apology, but Sandler wasn’t having it. Instead, he invited everyone at the Dolby Theatre to join him for a pickup basketball game featuring “the guy from Nosferatu,” meaning Bill Skarsgård. Before pretending to leave the ceremony, Sandler had “one more thing” to handle – shouting “Chalamet!” at Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet. This was a callback to Sandler’s recent habit of yelling the A Complete Unknown star’s last name in his signature Sandler style, something he’s previously done at the Golden Globes and on SNL.
