Jack Harlow Reveals His Aunt Thought He Portrayed Himself in ‘SNL’ Parody

Jack Harlow didn’t actually appear on Saturday Night Live, but someone in his family was convinced he did.

On Monday (April 13), Harlow hopped on his Instagram Story to share that his aunt believed he went on SNL to talk about his latest album, Monica.

“My aunt texted me and told me she was proud of me for going on SNL and addressing everything,” he wrote, posting a photo of himself wearing a silk bonnet. “My aunt that I am related to actually thought that was me.”

The person who actually played Harlow was Ben Marshall, who appeared during Michael Che’s Weekend Update segment dressed in a brown Kangol hat—similar to one Harlow has been wearing lately—along with a brown turtleneck and glasses.

In the skit, Marshall, acting as Harlow, touched on everything from his shift toward a neo-soul sound to the “clever little nicknames” critics have given him, including Mos Def-initely Not, LL Cool Whip, D’Anglo, JÄY-ZZ Topp, Lil Wayne’s World, and Kan-Yay, It’s Friday!

The sketch dropped just weeks after Harlow said on a March episode of the New York Times’ Popcast that he “got Blacker” while discussing his shift toward a sound more rooted in Black music. “I love Black music. I love the sound of Black music,” he said.

“I knew that there were multiple things appealing about this route, but I also came to the decision, I’m proud to say, off of what feels good in my ear,” he continued. “I love R&B music. I love the sound of soft, intimate, melodic music. I want to be understood. I want to write melodies that invite people to sing along.”
