Just because Lizzo is spotted hanging out with another celebrity doesn’t automatically mean they’re close friends in real life… except when it comes to SZA.
While fans often assume their favorite artists are all best friends behind the scenes, Lizzo is shutting down that idea. The chart-topping singer has worked with plenty of artists over the years, but she made it clear that appearing together onstage or in photos doesn’t always translate into a real-life friendship. For Lizzo, taking a picture or collaborating on a song is completely different from having genuine industry friendships.
During a conversation with Joel Madden on his Artist Friendly podcast, Lizzo pushed back on the belief that “all famous people know each other and we’re all best friends.” She laughed while explaining that snapping a photo with someone at the Grammys doesn’t mean they’re constantly talking behind the scenes.
“Even people who have songs together, people think they’re besties,” she said. “It’s like, no. I like them as an artist, I respect their music and we collabed. But like, I sent them files. They recorded it and sent it back to me.”
Lizzo also explained that even when she’s filmed music videos or worked closely with other artists, those moments usually don’t go beyond professional interactions. According to her, being on set together doesn’t automatically create a real friendship.
“I don’t really have many people who [I can] talk to about this sort of thing,” Lizzo admitted. She then gave major praise to SZA, revealing that the SOS star is one of the few people in the industry she genuinely leans on.
“I talk to SZA, I love her,” Lizzo shared. “She’s one of the only few people—you’ve gotta have her on the show. But like, she’s the only person that I can call and be like, ‘Okay b*tch,’ and she’s like, ‘Okay.’”
Joel Madden responded by saying he’s also a huge fan of SZA and would love to have her appear on his podcast someday. Check out Lizzo’s full conversation with the Good Charlotte member below.
