Fat Joe says New York City subway commuters have become so cautious of each other that even giving away free Knicks merchandise wasn’t enough to win their trust.
During Tuesday’s episode of the Joe and Jada podcast, the rapper recalled an experience from earlier this month when he handed out Knicks gear on a subway train. The encounter left him feeling that many passengers are increasingly suspicious and reluctant to trust strangers, even when they’re being offered something for free.
“Nobody trust nobody on the train,” Fat Joe said in the clip. “So I’m out there giving away free Knicks stuff.”
“They were afraid to take it,” co-host Jadakiss joked.
According to Fat Joe, even riders who recognized him hesitated to accept the free merchandise.
“The women knew it was Fat Joe, and they were still scared to take it,” he said. “They probably thought I was going to do something crazy after handing them their stuff.”
Fat Joe went on to explain what he believes is a deep sense of mistrust among subway riders, saying many people keep to themselves and avoid interactions because of the things they frequently witness during their commutes.
“You know how you see all that wild shit on the train? Everybody on the train is like this,” he said while imitating a blank stare.
“N****s mothers is on the train like this,” he continued, acting out another cautious expression before adding, “Nobody on the train trust nobody on the train.”
Jadakiss then joked, “That’s why you got to start dancing. Just start doing shit … How do we make the train better?”
Fat Joe responded by pointing to some of the behavior he has witnessed on public transit.
“I don’t know because there’s n***s taking shits on the train … How about this? The minute I come out the train, 30,000 people, ‘Yo, Crack!’ They stopping the car. It’s a different life in the train. I’m telling you, n***s is, like, traumatized in the train.”
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks were set to face the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 on Wednesday (June 10) at Madison Square Garden, with Wu-Tang Clan scheduled to perform during halftime.
New episodes of the Joe and Jada podcast stream exclusively on Netflix.
