LL Cool J is looking back on one of hip-hop’s strangest backstage stories, and he still finds the whole situation funny. During a recent episode of his Rock The Bells Radio show, the rap icon recalled the moment he discovered that the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard had damaged several of his plaques while at Chung King Studios in New York.
“I remember one time Chris Lighty called me up,” LL Cool J said. “He’s like, ‘Yo, you got to come down here. You got to come to Chung King Studios.'”
Not knowing what had happened, LL asked what was going on. Lighty then gave him a shocking explanation: “He said, ‘For some reason, Ol’ Dirty Bastard just came in here and broke all your plaques and pissed on them.'”
LL admitted he was completely confused by the incident and had no clue what caused the outburst.
“I said, ‘What’d I do?’ I didn’t even understand it,” he recalled. “Loved him ever since! Shout out to Ol’ Dirty, man.”
Although LL is sharing the story publicly for the first time, the bizarre moment has been part of hip-hop history for years. The late Chris Lighty previously claimed that ODB arrived at the studio intoxicated and became upset after employees refused to let him record while he was under the influence. According to Lighty, the Wu-Tang Clan member then pulled LL’s plaques from the wall and urinated on one of them before the studio receptionist contacted police.
Lighty also shared that ODB’s attitude changed almost immediately after he walked out of the studio.
“At the bottom of the elevator, he changes his whole tune,” Lighty recalled years later. “He was laughing his ass off.”
Chung King Studios founder John King also later confirmed that one of the damaged plaques was never returned to LL Cool J. Instead, he kept the urine-covered plaque, which reportedly remains part of his personal collection to this day.
ODB’s unpredictable nature became one of the most talked-about aspects of his legacy, with countless stories from those who knew him highlighting his spontaneous and chaotic personality. This latest story adds another wild moment to the legend of one of hip-hop’s most unforgettable artists.
For LL Cool J, however, there appears to be no bad blood. Years later, the rap icon has chosen to look back on the bizarre incident with laughter rather than frustration.
