Director Says Dame Dash’s Refusal to Hear Jay-Z Out Derailed Roc-A-Fella Documentary

Filmmaker Adam Bhala Lough has previously explored the world of hip-hop with projects like The Carter, his documentary about Lil Wayne. He also claims he was once offered the chance by Dame Dash to direct an official Roc-A-Fella documentary, complete with access to hundreds of hours of never-before-seen archival footage. However, the project reportedly fell apart over a disagreement about whether Jay-Z should be included as a key voice in the film.

As spotted by Joey on Twitter, Lough shared his thoughts on Substack while reacting to a recent article by journalist Andre Gee. The piece focused on Dame Dash’s ongoing public criticism of Jay-Z, particularly following Hov’s performances at Yankee Stadium. According to Lough, Dame’s unwillingness to include Jay-Z’s perspective ultimately brought the documentary to a halt.

“True story: Dame asked me to direct the official Rocafella documentary,” he wrote. “He’s sitting on 100s of hours of incredible footage from that era. I said I’d only do it if I got Jay-Z’s side of the story too. Dame refused. I declined. I’d still be open to it if he ever changes his mind.”

While the documentary remains shelved for now, Lough suggested the door isn’t completely closed if Dame Dash eventually changes his stance—or if another filmmaker decides to move forward without including the Roc Nation boss. For longtime fans, it’s a disappointing update on what could have been a fascinating look at the rise and fall of Roc-A-Fella Records.

Dame Dash and Jay-Z have been at odds over the Roc-A-Fella legacy for years, so it’s hardly surprising that they have very different versions of the label’s history. Their partnership unraveled after Jay-Z left for Def Jam, a move that reportedly sidelined Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke from the label’s future. Since then, the former business partners have been involved in several legal disputes over copyright issues, ownership rights, and other business matters.

In recent years, Dame Dash has continued to publicly criticize Jay-Z for a variety of reasons, ranging from business disagreements to more personal grievances. While a reconciliation between the two appears unlikely, it can’t be ruled out entirely. If an official Roc-A-Fella documentary ever comes together with both men sharing their perspectives, it could potentially open the door to a long-awaited new chapter in their relationship.
