Tyrese’s reaction to hearing Busta Rhymes and J Dilla’s new collaborative album has become a viral moment in its own right.
A video of the singer and actor listening to Dillagence II started making the rounds on social media shortly after the project was released on Aug. 25. The clip showed Tyrese sitting on a plane as he listened to several songs from the album, smiling at one point as he took it all in.
“Fuck Busta Rhymes,” Tyrese jokingly captioned the video. “I’m only 3 songs in WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU BRO…You have stressed me the F’out I’m only 3 songs in!”
Dillagence II sees Busta Rhymes rapping over production from the late J Dilla. The 19-track project runs for about an hour and was released through Busta’s Conglomerate Entertainment.
The album was created using selections from a collection of more than 300 unreleased instrumentals that Dilla personally gave Busta before his death in 2006. Busta reportedly kept the collection largely untouched over the years, previously using some of the production for Raekwon’s 2009 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II.
Dilla’s estate and his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, gave their blessing for Dillagence II. Ma Dukes also appears at both ends of the album, opening the project with “Ma Dukes Speak Again” and returning for the closing track, “Ma Dukes & J Dilla Closing Word.”
Busta also enlisted an impressive lineup of collaborators, including Lil Wayne, Big Sean, Anderson .Paak, Common, Ludacris, Jon Batiste, and Talib Kweli. The late D’Angelo also appears on the project through vocals recorded more than two decades ago.
His D’Angelo-assisted track “This Woman” was one of three singles released ahead of the album, with a Hype Williams-directed visual arriving alongside the full project.
Dillagence II continues a musical connection between Busta and J Dilla that stretches back decades. Busta previously honored the legendary Detroit producer with his 2007 mixtape Dillagence, hosted by DJ Mick Boogie and similarly built around Dilla’s production.
