Latto Reveals Spicy Seafood Boil Triggered Her Labor

With her due date only a day away and no signs of labor, Latto decided to find out whether her dinner could help speed things up. She opted for a particularly spicy meal, and according to the rapper, the results came sooner than expected. Less than an hour after eating, her water broke.

During Thursday’s (Oct. 29) episode of Hot Ones, Latto recounted the experience while discussing her go-to seafood boil order with host Sean Evans. Her favorite is what she calls the “Juicy Special,” which combines lemon pepper, Cajun, and hot seasonings. The conversation led her to share a detail she hadn’t previously revealed publicly. “It was a seafood boil that put me into labor,” she said.

“So it was the night before my due date, and I was showing no signs of labor,” Latto explained. “And I was like, ‘No, I really wanna have my baby tomorrow.'” Eager to welcome her daughter as planned, she ordered the spicy meal in hopes of getting things moving.

“I kid you not, less than an hour later, I felt some liquid trickling down,” she recalled. As a first-time mom, Latto initially wasn’t certain what was happening but soon realized her water had broken. Although it’s unclear whether the seafood boil actually triggered her labor, the rapper seemed convinced of its impact. “So shoutout to seafood boils,” she joked.

The Atlanta rapper gave birth to her first child with 21 Savage in May, just weeks before dropping her fourth studio album, Big Mama. Interestingly, the seafood boil was quite different from the foods she had been craving throughout her pregnancy. Despite her usual love for spicy meals, Latto told Evans that pregnancy left her craving sweets instead. “I had sweet cravings real bad,” she revealed, adding that her tolerance for spicy food never fully returned to what it was before.

Carrying her pregnancy also made the recording process for Big Mama considerably more challenging. During her appearance on Hot Ones, Latto described how even walking from the studio’s control room to the recording booth left her struggling to catch her breath. She often had to take breaks before recording and made frequent trips to the bathroom.

Nevertheless, Latto managed to finish the album while getting ready for motherhood. Big Mama was released on May 29, marking her first full-length project since welcoming her child.
