Ryan Murphy Drops New Details on ‘Monster’ Season 3 With ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Star in the Lead

Ryan Murphy is cranking up the terror for Monster Season 3.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the director and producer has cast Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam as infamous killer Ed Gein, better known as the “Butcher of Plainfield.”

Netflix’s synopsis paints a chilling picture: “Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare.”

It continues, “Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades. From Psycho to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Silence of the Lambs, Gein’s macabre legacy gave birth to fictional monsters born in his image and ignited a cultural obsession with the criminally deviant. Ed Gein didn’t just influence a genre — he became the blueprint for modern horror.”

The third entry in Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, unpacks how a seemingly quiet man from Plainfield, Wisconsin became one of the most terrifying murderers in American history. Its tagline warns: “He revealed to the world the most horrific truth of all — that monsters aren’t born, they’re made…by us.”

Murphy’s Monster franchise began with Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story starring Evan Peters, which premiered in September 2022. Season two, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, arrived in 2024, spotlighting the infamous brothers convicted of killing their parents in 1989.

Hunnam, best known for playing biker kingpin Jax Teller across seven seasons of Sons of Anarchy, now steps into one of horror’s most disturbing roles. Monster: The Ed Gein Story hits Netflix on October 3.
