Billie Eilish Reportedly in Discussions to Star in Film Adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s ‘The Bell Jar’

Billie Eilish may soon be stepping onto the big screen with a role in a film adaptation of the classic novel The Bell Jar.

According to Deadline, the 10-time Grammy winner is currently in discussions to star in the upcoming movie, which is based on Sylvia Plath’s 1963 semi-autobiographical novel. The book remains Plath’s only full-length novel published during her lifetime and was released shortly before she died by suicide at the age of 30.

Filmmaker Sarah Polley (Women Talking, Take This Waltz) is reportedly attached to write and direct the project, while Focus Features is working toward securing a deal to finance and distribute the film. Brad Pitt’s media company, Plan B, is also set to produce alongside Joy Gorman Wettels and StudioCanal.

If the deal is finalized, Eilish would take on the role of Esther Greenwood, the central character in The Bell Jar. The singer previously made her acting debut in a 2023 episode of the Prime Video limited series Swarm, where the Hit Me Hard and Soft artist portrayed a fictional cult leader named Eva, who attempts to recruit the show’s main character, Dre (Dominique Fishback).

Eilish is also preparing to release her own film this year, the 3D concert movie HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR, which she co-directed with three-time Academy Award winner James Cameron. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 8.

“This has been one of my favorite tours everrrrrr and being able to capture it and co-direct this film with @jamescameronofficial has truly been a dream come true. can’t wait for you all to see it :’)” the 23-year-old wrote on Instagram in November.

Like James Cameron, Billie Eilish is also an Oscar winner. She has taken home the award for Best Original Song twice—first in 2022 for “No Time to Die,” and again in 2024 for “What Was I Made For?”—making her the youngest person ever to earn two Oscars.
