One of Hip Hop’s most recognizable artists is joining the cast of the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, with the role going to someone from a legendary musical family. SwayvoTwain, the son of D’Angelo and Angie Stone, will play The Notorious B.I.G. in Universal Pictures’ Snoop.
The casting marks SwayvoTwain’s first major film role. Born Michael D’Angelo Archer II, he has mainly focused on music as a recording artist and songwriter, releasing tracks such as “Ms. Angie’s Son” and “DoveSoar.” His parents were both influential figures in R&B and Soul. Stone died at 63 in a March 2025 highway crash in Alabama, while D’Angelo died at 51 that October following a battle with cancer.
SwayvoTwain’s casting also offers more insight into the story Snoop plans to tell. Christopher Wallace and Snoop Dogg rose to prominence on opposite coasts as tensions between Bad Boy Records and Death Row Records escalated throughout the 1990s. Still, their connection was more nuanced than the rivalry that came to define the era in the public eye. Variety reports that the two had mutual respect for one another, even as tensions within their respective circles became increasingly hostile.
SwayvoTwain isn’t the only fresh face joining the project. Bentley Green will portray Snoop’s cousin RBX, one of the early names on Death Row’s roster, while Los Angeles rapper G Perico will take on the role of Big Reecie Cup, a figure connected to Snoop’s Long Beach roots. The film already stars Jonathan Daviss in the lead role, with Camron Jones playing Tupac Shakur and Myles Bullock set to portray Dr. Dre. Lauren London will also appear as Snoop’s late mother, Beverly Tate.
The expanding cast hints that the film will devote plenty of time to the people around Snoop during his rise in the 1990s, rather than rushing through that era as just another chapter in his decades-long career. That includes his Death Row years alongside Dre and Tupac, a period that placed him close to one of hip-hop’s most intense conflicts.
Craig Brewer is directing Snoop, working from his rewrite of a screenplay originally penned by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Snoop is producing the film alongside Imagine Entertainment and Death Row Pictures, with music from his catalog expected to feature throughout. Universal has scheduled Snoop for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027.
