Britney Spears appeared to show support for a YouTube video that criticizes her mother, Lynne Spears.
On July 21, content creator Julia Boteng uploaded a video titled “How Britney Spears’ Mom Failed Her,” in which she argued that Lynne Spears allegedly contributed to a dysfunctional upbringing and relied on Britney to become the family’s primary provider. Lynne shares Britney with her ex-husband, Jamie Spears, to whom she was married from 1976 to 2002. The former couple also have a son, Bryan, 49, and daughter Jamie Lynn Spears, 35, best known for Zoey 101.
At the start of the video, Boteng explained that it is part of her ongoing series examining the lives of controversial stage mothers, including Diane Haughton, the mother of late singer Aaliyah, and the late Debra McCurdy, mother of actress and author Jennette McCurdy. The video also references Lynne’s 2008 memoir, Through the Storm, in which she reflected on leaving her career as a kindergarten teacher to support Britney and expressed regret over being unable to stop her daughter from being portrayed in a highly sexualized way during her teenage years.
The “Gimme More” singer later shared her support for the vlog, encouraging fans to watch it in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday (August 9).
“Find the video !!!!! extremely interesting words coming from this brilliant lady !!!!…….” she wrote alongside the post.
In late July, Lynne Spears shared an Instagram Reel announcing her intention to reintroduce herself to the public, saying she wanted to present a different side of herself after years of experiencing “ups and downs.”
Spears, who in 2021 said her mother played a role in the conservatorship she was placed under, according to Page Six, has also opened up about her own struggles as a parent. The singer previously admitted she feels she “failed” her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
“I wanna tell my kids and people in general that I’m sorry for my mistakes in the past,” she wrote in a post on X.
